Based in Kyrgyzstan, Tais Plus is a nongovernmental organization founded in 1997 by and for sex workers to advance their human rights and ensure the protection of people living with HIV/AIDS. It has engaged in substantial awareness-raising initiatives, including with key decision-makers. In 2006, it launched a successful advocacy campaign to oppose the criminalization of sex work. Despite its successes, violations of human rights persist – particularly by law enforcement, medical, and social institutions – and Tais Plus continues its work to respond and prevent such abuses.
The case studies in this report offer a look at real-life sex workerled programming that has reduced police abuse, health risks, and other adverse impacts of bad laws and law enforcement on sex workers.
